Caledonian Sleeper is an iconic overnight rail journey connecting Scotland with London, operating nightly (except Saturdays), serving major cities and rural destinations.
Established in the late 19th century, Caledonian Sleeper has a long-standing reputation for comfort, hospitality and delivering a unique travel experience across the UK’s scenic routes. The service operates primarily overnight, allowing passengers to sleep comfortably on specially designed sleeper trains, arriving refreshed at their destination.
As a service operated on behalf of the Scottish Government, it is part of the UK’s public sector efforts to promote sustainable and convenient travel.

THE ROLE
The Fleet Contracts Manager will be a member of the Caledonian Sleeper Operations Team headed by the Operations Director, responsible for a team to support the successful and sustainable delivery of the Fleet. The role ensures robust oversight and management of all suppliers contributing to safe and reliable fleet delivery for our guests.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing the Train Services Agreement (TSA) with Alstom and the Technical Support & Spares Supply Agreement (TSSSA) with CAF (UK).
- Ensuring final fleet acceptance by CAF and closure of the programme under the Manufacture & Supply Agreement (MSA).
- Leading a rigorous contractual and commercial governance process to coordinate manufacturer, operator, and maintenance providers.
- Delivering efficient and effective maintenance for the Mk5 Fleet and managing the maintenance contractor, alongside development of maintenance/overhaul strategies with the Fleet Engineering Manager.
- Supporting the Operations Director in collaboration with the Fleet Engineering Manager with capturing and analysing business, financial, commercial, and people requirements for fleet planning and continuous improvement.
- Working closely with the Fleet Engineering Manager; balancing strategic oversight with hands-on delivery of tactical activities.
Structure and reporting:
- Direct line management of a team supporting fleet delivery.
- Effective collaboration with Engineering, Safety, Operations, Finance, Legal and other key internal stakeholders.
Key accountabilities:
- Act as the contract representative for Maintenance, Spares and Cleaning & Presentation for Caledonian Sleeper Limited.
- Manage gaps and interdependencies between MSA, TSA, and TSSSA contracts to optimise fleet delivery to minimise safety and commercial risks.
- Oversee Fleet Presentation standards and engage with relevant stakeholders.
- Develop and implement systems to measure contract performance and drive best-practice standardisation.
- Lead TSA/TSSSA contract meetings and finance review meetings to ensure smooth delivery.
- Build excellent working relationships with key suppliers involved in fleet delivery.
- Promote a culture of continual improvement within the team and the wider business.
- Drive a best-practice, collaborative environment across responsibilities; advise the Operations Department on fleet maintenance and overhaul strategies.
- Ensure robust monthly reporting on the TSA and TSSSA contracts to enable open conversations about progress, risks, and issues.
Essential technical and professional skills, knowledge, and qualifications:
- Working knowledge of rolling stock engineering methodologies/approaches.
- Leadership experience in an operational delivery environment.
- Knowledge of business functions including finance, commercial, legal, operations, safety, risk, HR, operational excellence, IT, sales, marketing, and communications.
- Advanced communication skills, especially with senior stakeholders; strong networking and influencing capabilities.
- Degree-level education (or equivalent experience).
- Membership of a professional engineering institution with ongoing professional accreditation (or working towards it).
- Evidence of relevant and up-to-date CPD.
