Caledonian Sleeper – Glasgow (Hybrid) Permanent, Full Time, 37.5 hours
Salary Range £50,000 - £55,000

Caledonian Sleeper is an iconic overnight rail journey connecting Scotland with London, operating nightly (except Saturdays), serving major cities and rural destinations. 

Established in the late 19th century, Caledonian Sleeper has a long-standing reputation for comfort, hospitality, and delivering a unique travel experience across the UK’s scenic routes. The service operates primarily overnight, allowing passengers to sleep comfortably on specially designed sleeper trains, arriving refreshed at their destination.

THE ROLE 

We are looking for a Fleet Assurance Engineer to join our Engineering Team here at Caledonian Sleeper. Caledonian Sleeper delivers a safe, reliable fleet of Mk5 coaches across the UK, providing an iconic guest experience. The role of Fleet Assurance Engineer provides engineering assurance to support internal teams and delivery partners, operating within a complex contractual stakeholder environment to robustly scrutinise and manage Engineering Change (including fleet modifications, maintenance intervals and limits and overhaul requires), Safety Related Defects and, upholding fleet integrity for guests and crews. 

The role drives continuous improvement in how we manage engineering processes and related governance, contributing to safer, more reliable operations and better collaboration across teams. 

This role will report to the Fleet Engineering Manager and will develop and maintain relationships with key engineering suppliers, industry bodies and internal stakeholders to foster collaboration and alignment on standards and performance. CSL Business 

RESPONSIBLITIES 

Our Fleet Assurance Engineer will successfully: 

  • Be the business lead relating to all matters concerning Engineering Change. This includes fleet modifications, maintenance periodicity and overhaul requirements. 
  • Provide business direction as to mandatory requirements such that Caledonian Sleeper Limited maintains compliance with all relevant legislation in relation to fleet technical matters. 
  • Own the Safety Related Defect (SRD) and National Incident Reporting (NIR) processes, ensuring issues are properly managed and risks are mitigated. 
  • Act as the lead Caledonian Sleeper representative during 3rd party audits of key engineering suppliers and manage the resulting improvement actions. 
  • Lead the engineering quality management process with support from the wider team. 
  • Identify fleet safety improvement programs from concept through to implementation. 
  • Engage with relevant industry bodies and standards to ensure Caledonian Sleeper interests are represented. 
  • Undertake and support technical investigations to identify immediate and underlying causes comprehensively. 
  • Update and optimise the appropriate Engineering Safety Management System procedures. 
  • Support additional relevant activities as required by the business and remain adaptable to evolving accountabilities. 
  • Act as an ambassador for the company and the fleet in all matters. 

The following skills, knowledge and qualifications are essential for this role: 

  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards Chartered status) with a track record of professional development. 
  • Working knowledge of Traction & Rolling Stock. 
  • Specific knowledge of Loco-Hauled Coaching Stock would be highly desirable. 
  • Understanding and experience of applying railway approval processes and relevant legislation applicable to the role. 
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to take ownership of tasks with a strong professional approach. 
  • Meticulous attention to detail and thorough due diligence. 
  • Ability to articulate technical justifications clearly and concisely to diverse audiences. 
  • Capability to lead complex technical projects, balancing requirements to meet business needs. 
  • Commitment to Continued Professional Development (CPD). 

CSL Business 

We would also require commitment from the successful candidate in relation to: 

  • Support the On Call Engineering process up to 1 week in every 5–6 weeks. 
  • Willingness to travel to support business needs as required.
