Caledonian Sleeper is an iconic overnight rail journey connecting Scotland with London, operating nightly (except Saturdays), serving major cities and rural destinations.
Established in the late 19th century, Caledonian Sleeper has a long-standing reputation for comfort, hospitality and delivering a unique travel experience across the UK’s scenic routes. The service operates primarily overnight, allowing passengers to sleep comfortably on specially designed sleeper trains, arriving refreshed at their destination.
As a service operated on behalf of the Scottish Government, it is part of the UK’s public sector efforts to promote sustainable and convenient travel.

THE ROLE
The Depot Contracts Engineer is the on-site ambassador for Caledonian Sleeper at our primary service delivery depot. You will oversee Operations, Maintenance, Cleaning and Presentation of the fleet, while managing stakeholders and coordinating with 3rd party contracted delivery partners to ensure reliable, high-quality output for our guests and onboard teams. The role requires strong contract governance, performance management, and effective collaboration with partners to consistently meet contract deliverables and high standards of service.
What you’ll do:
On-Site Representation and Stakeholder Management
- Act as the Caledonian Sleeper representative on-site at the designated depots.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with 3rd party delivery partners, internal stakeholders and onboard teams.
- Lead communications to ensure clear expectations, timely updates and alignment across all parties.
Contract Performance and Governance
- Develop and implement systems to measure contract performance against agreed KPIs and service levels.
- Drive best-practice standardisation across similar contracts to improve consistency and efficiency.
- Monitor warranty processes, ensuring understanding and compliance by all staff, contractors and maintainers on-site.
- Manage 3rd party joint-working processes, including governance, SLAs and regular performance reviews.
Fleet Cleaning, Presentation and Depots Operations
- Support the development and optimisation of Cleaning and Presentation standards for the fleet.
- Contribute to depot process optimisation spanning operations, maintenance and cleaning activities.
- Oversee in-process checks and final inspections of maintenance and cleaning work where applicable, ensuring compliance with quality standards.
- Provide 1st level engineering support and coordinate input from the fleet engineering team where necessary.
Additional Services and Incident Management
- Manage additional contract services such as arising work and relief events, including tracking, remediation and reporting.
- Coordinate with third-party partners to resolve fleet issues promptly and minimise impact on service delivery.
- Support Engineering & Contracts 1st Line on Call Roster.
Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for improvement in contract delivery, safety and efficiency.
- Implement corrective actions and share learnings across depots to raise overall performance.
What we’re looking for:
- Experience in contract management within rail, transport or a related service delivery environment.
- Engineering qualification to HND/HNC level or equivalent industry experience.
- Demonstrated ability to lead on-site partnerships with third-party vendors.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of warranty processes and quality assurance practices.
- Experience with performance measurement, KPI tracking and process standardisation.
- A passionate advocate for employee experience and a track record of delivering tangible improvements.
