Major disruption to high level services at Glasgow Central expected until at least the end of the day on Tuesday 17 March

A fire at a building near to Glasgow Central station meant the decision was taken to close the station.

Trains serving the low level platforms at Glasgow Central have now resumed. These are operated by ScotRail. However, Glasgow Central high level station will remained closed until the start of service on Wednesday 18 March.

As a result, major disruption will continue until at least the end of the day on Tuesday 17 March.

Avanti West Coast customer advice:

Glasgow Central high level platforms (where Avanti West Coast trains run) remain closed due to the impact of the nearby fire.

With no trains able to run to / from Glasgow Central high level until at least Tuesday 17 March, Avanti West Coast trains will start and end at Motherwell, which you can reach using ScotRail services from Glasgow Central low level or nearby stations.

The majority of trains between Scotland and London are able to run normally to / from Motherwell and Edinburgh. Other routes, such as to Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, and North Wales are unaffected by this disruption. More information will be provided as soon as we know the impact for the rest of the week.

You can use your ticket on the following train companies at no extra cost in both directions:

  • CrossCountry between Edinburgh and Birmingham
  • LNER between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross (please note this acceptance will not be in place on Saturday 14 on Sunday 15 March due to engineering works impacting LNER services)
  • ScotRail between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street, and also between Anderston / Glasgow Central low level / Argyle Street and Motherwell
  • TransPennine Express between Edinburgh and Preston

Avanti West Coast tickets dated between 8 and 19 March can be used at no extra cost on any Avanti West Coast service on the same route until the end of Thursday 19 March.

If you abandoned your journey as a result of the disruption you can claim a fee-free refund from where you bought your ticket.

Caledonian Sleeper customer advice:

All Caledonian Sleeper services that were scheduled to operate from Glasgow Central will now run to and from Edinburgh instead.

To travel between Glasgow and Edinburgh, you may use your tickets on ScotRail services between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh at no extra cost.

Caledonian Sleeper are in the process of contacting customers on booked services. More information on the ScotRail ticket acceptance can be found on the Caledonian Sleeper website.

CrossCountry customer advice:

No trains will run to or from Glasgow Central. Services will be revised to run to Edinburgh.

To travel between Glasgow and Edinburgh, your ticket can be used on ScotRail services between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street in both directions. Additionally, you may also use ScotRail services between Argyle Street and Motherwell in both directions. Both of these routes can be used at no extra cost.

Once you have arrived at Edinburgh, you may then travel on the next available CrossCountry service south from Edinburgh.

If you decide to travel from a different station due to this disruption and need to return to that station later, you will also be able to use your existing ticket to do this at no extra cost. Unfortunately, any seat reservations will not be carried over to another train, but Coach B, H and L are unreserved coaches on CrossCountry services (where available) so please head to them.

Services can now call at Glasgow Central low level.

The following services remain suspended in both directions:

  • Glasgow Central circular services
  • Glasgow Central - Paisley Canal
  • Glasgow Central - Newton
  • Glasgow Central - Barrhead
  • Glasgow Central - Neilston
  • Glasgow Central - East Kilbride
  • Glasgow Central - Ardrossan South Beach / Ardrossan Harbour
  • Glasgow Central - Edinburgh via Carstairs

The following service alterations are in place:

  • Services between Glasgow Central and Gourock will be reduced to one train per hour in each direction and will run between Paisley Gilmour Street and Gourock only
  • Services between Glasgow Central and Wemyss Bay services will be reduced to one train per hour each direction and will run between Paisley Gilmour Street and Wemyss Bay only
  • Services between Glasgow Central and Largs will run between Largs and Kilwinning only
  • Services between Glasgow Central and Lanark will run between Lanark and Motherwell only
  • Services between Glasgow Central and Kilmarnock services will run between Barrhead and Kilmarnock only
  • Services between Glasgow Central and Ayr will be reduced to one train per hour and will run between Paisley Gilmour Street and Ayr only
  • Services between Glasgow Central and Dumfries / Carlisle will run between Kilmarnock and Dumfries / Carlisle only
  • Services between Glasgow Central and Stranraer services will run between Kilmarnock and Stranraer only
  • Services between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Shotts will run as a limited service between West Calder and Edinburgh only

Ticket acceptance:

You can use your ticket, at no additional cost, on ScotRail services via any alternative route to your destination.

Your ticket can also be used, at no extra cost, on:

    • Renfrewshire - 3, 17, 26, 38, 51, 54, 66, 72, 166, 329, 757 and 904 (3 and 66 cover Barrhead)
  • Glasgow Subway inner and outer circles
  • Stagecoach Buses all routes to / from Glasgow. Ticket acceptance is not valid between 07:00 and 09:30 and 16:30 and 18:30

Please note that due to road closures, buses may be diverted. Please check your journey before travel.

Customers should check for information on services operating in and around the city before travelling and ensure they can complete their entire journey during this disruption.

If you have had to drive to another station your ticket will be valid to collect your car on your return journey. Speak to a member of staff to validate your ticket.

TransPennine Express customer advice:

How does this affect my journey?

TransPennine Express will not be operating between Glasgow Central and Carlisle in either direction whilst Glasgow Central high level station is closed.

Most Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street services will either terminate or start at Carlisle. Please check your journey before you travel.

Train crew in Glasgow may be displaced due to the incident. TransPennine Express advise that you check your journey before you travel on the following routes until further notice, as short notice delays and cancellations are expected:

  • Edinburgh to Manchester Airport
  • Edinburgh to Newcastle

We will provide an update on how long this disruption is likely to last and its impact on services as soon as more information becomes available. In the meantime, please continue to check before you travel until further notice.

What should I do?

Connections to Motherwell are available with ScotRail. You can use your existing ticket at no extra cost from Glasgow Central Low Level station or from Argyle Street station (a short distance from Glasgow Central) to catch a direct train to Motherwell. From there, Avanti West Coast are running to / from London. Customers can change at Preston for TransPennine Express or Northern services towards Manchester.

Please allow extra time for your journey and check before you travel.

You can use your ticket at no extra cost on the following services:

  • Avanti West Coast between Edinburgh / Motherwell and Preston
  • Northern between Preston and Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Airport
  • ScotRail services between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street (with onward journeys available from Edinburgh with Avanti West Coast, LNER and CrossCountry)
  • TransPennine Express services between Edinburgh and Preston / Manchester Airport

If you have purchased a ticket and your journey has been affected by this disruption, you can use your ticket dated tickets dated from Monday 9 March to Sunday 15 March (inclusive) can be used to travel up to and including Tuesday 17 March at no extra cost. Alternatively, if the train you intended to travel on is cancelled or you are unable to complete your journey then you can apply for a refund from your point of purchase.

Compensation:

You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.
