Caledonian Sleeper completes roll out of £150m new fleet of trains as service introduced on Highlander route

Serco Caledonian Sleeper has completed the roll out of its new overnight trains with the fleet now operating all services between London and Scotland.

The introduction of the Highlander route this week follows the new carriages making their debut in April on the Lowlander between London and Glasgow/Edinburgh. Now, guests can also travel between London and Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William.

Designed to accommodate the modern-day traveller, the new trains offer accommodation ranging from completely new comfort seats for the budget traveller to rooms with double beds and en-suites – for the first time in the history of Caledonian Sleeper. Accommodation includes:

  • Completely new redesigned comfort seats with personal locker, reading light and charging point
  • Classic Rooms (solo or shared use with an option of interconnecting rooms, toiletries included)
  • Club Rooms (solo or shared use with en-suite, station lounge access, breakfast, luxury toiletries included)
  • Caledonian Double (double bed with en-suite, station lounge access, breakfast, luxury toiletries included)
  • Accessible Rooms (double or twin, toiletries included and directly adjacent to accessible toilet)

Combining travel to and from the heart of London with comfortable overnight accommodation, prices for Comfort Seats start from £45, Classic Rooms from £140 for Solo or £170 for two people sharing (equating to £85 per person), Club Rooms from £205 for Solo and £250 for Shared and Caledonian Doubles from £335 for Solo and £400 for Shared. All Accessible Rooms are priced at the same level as Classic Rooms – including those with double beds.

Other new features are included on the new trains, such as a hotel-style keycard entry system, charging panels and WiFi throughout the train.

Ryan Flaherty, Serco’s Managing Director for Caledonian Sleeper, said: “Our new trains have been years in the making and to see them complete their introduction to service is extremely exciting for everyone involved.

“The Highlander route has always been popular – there’s nothing quite like falling asleep just outside of London and awaking at the foot of the mountains in the Scottish Highlands. With the new service we are sure to see familiar faces continue to make the journey between London and Scotland as well as many new guests enjoy a service which is fit for today’s traveller, combining modern facilities expected with that feeling of nostalgia that comes from long-distance railway travel.

“We have worked really hard to learn lessons from introduction of the trains on the lowlander route earlier this year.  We are now confident that all passengers can rely on the Caledonian Sleeper to provide the journey of a night time.”

Spend Time with Friends

The cold weather is fast approaching and the nights are drawing in – so when better to get away for a few days of fun with your friends? Whether you take a weekend break or advantage of a few days of your remaining annual leave – gather friends and travel with Caledonian Sleeper for an end of year adventure.

A girls’ weekend in London

What’s a girls’ weekend without afternoon tea? Treat yourself to a luxury afternoon tea at The Savoy, or enjoy a truly British experience with afternoon tea on board Glass Room as you sail down the River Thames, taking in the views of London.

With over 300 shops, make a trip to Oxford Street for a bit of retail therapy with friends. Even better, you don’t have to worry about how many shopping bags you have to travel home with when you’re getting on board Caledonian Sleeper.

Round off a busy day of shopping with some dinner and a show, particularly if you and your friends are fans of musicals and the theatre. Musicals including Mamma Mia!, Pretty Woman or Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 are a must.

A historic trip to Edinburgh

Wrap up and take a trip to Edinburgh this autumn. Steeped in Scottish history, the Scottish capital has plenty to offer for a weekend break.

The most visited attraction in Edinburgh is the castle, situated high on Castle Rock and visible from the city’s main street, Princes Street. A trip to the castle is worthwhile to find out more about the city’s history.

To hear more about the city’s history, some spooky tales, and have a guided tour of the city, a walking tour should be on your Edinburgh itinerary.

Mary King’s Close is a historic close underneath buildings on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh where many people once lived. If you and your friends are brave, you can now join guided tours of the close to hear the many stories about those who lived there and the reported hauntings of the area.

A foodie weekend in Glasgow

With such a wide range of places to eat and visit, Glasgow has earned itself a reputation as a bit of a ‘foodie scene’ in Scotland.

Join a Glasgow Food and Drink tour with your friends to take you through the history of Glasgow, with recommendations of where to go for a taste of Scotland.

There are plenty of opportunities in Glasgow to try Scotland’s famous dish, haggis, including Ubiquitous Chip in the city’s West End. While in the West End, visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, one of Glasgow’s most popular attractions featuring over 8,000 objects and 22 galleries.

Visit Nessie and explore the Scottish highlands from Inverness

Scotland, for many, conjures up images of the infamous Loch Ness Monster. Enjoy a trip to search for Nessie yourself – even if you don’t see the monster, the views are worth it. The weather might not be warm enough to take part in any watersports on the loch, but you can cruise along the loch with your friends and enjoy the scenery while keeping an eye out for Nessie with Loch Ness by Jacobite.

Enjoy an action-packed weekend in the Highlands

If your friends are more of an adventure-seeking group, visit Aviemore or Fort William for an action-packed few days. As we’re nearing snow season, the Cairngorm and Nevis ranges have activities for everyone, including skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, tubing and tree adventures.

How Mackintosh inspired Scottish design forever

Glasgow-born architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh is world-renowned for his distinct designs, especially across various locations in his home city. In October, Glasgow will celebrate the life and work of Mackintosh through a series of exhibitions, events and tours across the main Mackintosh attractions, buildings and collections.

We’ve created a list of some of the best places in Glasgow to be inspired by Mackintosh’s iconic Scottish design. Take a trip with Caledonian Sleeper to Glasgow and explore design in Scotland.

House for an Art Lover

Based in Bellahouston Park, House for an Art Lover is a wedding and conference venue as well as a cultural attraction. The Mackintosh Suite opens as a visitor attraction and the Art Lovers Shop and Art Lovers Café are open daily.

House for an Art Lover has promoted some public art competitions which have led to installations of unusual art works in ART PARK Glasgow. Grounds for Play, Glasshouse, AMAZE, Homage to Shipbuilding and Doocot are among some of the works at ART PARK.

Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery

The Hunterian Art Gallery has one of the most distinguished public art collections in Scotland. The gallery features the largest single holding of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, known as the father of Glasgow style, and the Mackintosh House, the reassembled interiors from his Glasgow home. The outdoor Sculpture Courtyard also features a small display of modern works by British artists.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

A short walk from The Hunterian is Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Opened in 1901, the museum is itself a work of stunning architecture and has 22 galleries. With free tours, events and family activities, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a great day out for all the family.

Mackintosh Queens Cross

Mackintosh Queen’s Cross is reflective of some of Glasgow’s greatest architecture. It is the only church designed by Mackintosh to be built and is now the international headquarters of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society. With stained glass and fascinating wood and stonework, it is no surprise the building is now an arts and heritage venue, with an extensive calendar of exhibitions, concerts and events.

The Willow Tearooms

After a day of exploring the city, take a break at the Willow Tea Rooms. The tea rooms were designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and George Walton, and the architecture and design is reflective of this to this day.

Mackintosh’s signature design concept appears across the tea rooms and in many other buildings across Glasgow.

Important information for guests booked on our Highlander services

Please Note – this is an Archived Page. Our new trains are now in service across all routes.

If you still want to travel with us on your original booking date, you do not need to do anything. Your booking will be automatically updated to an alternative accommodation type for your own use on our current trains, and the tickets you have remain valid for your journey.
