Wimbledon will soon be in full swing and there’s nothing more iconic than celebrating with the traditional strawberries and cream combo and a glass of Pimm’s. But with London offering a host of tennis themed events there are plenty more ways to celebrate the very best of the great British summer whether you have centre court tickets or not.
Helping guests make the most of the famous tennis tournament, Caledonian Sleeper has tallied up its winning hotspots in the capital, where there are more than just fresh strawberries available.
Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum
Located in the grounds of the famous All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum offers an insight into the traditions, triumphs and sights that have made Wimbledon the most coveted title in tennis. Visitors can explore the multi-dimensional tour using touch screens and audio guides to discover more about tennis throughout time as well as get up close to championship trophies and feel the fabrics of tennis fashions from the Victorian period.
The Museum’s current exhibition, On Air: Wimbledon and the BBC 1927-2017, tells the story of Wimbledon’s relationship with the BBC and celebrates the 90th anniversary of the first radio broadcast from the tournament.
Tennis on the Terrace
Boutique five-star South Place Hotel is inviting sporting enthusiasts to escape the crowds of Wimbledon and join its Tennis on the Terrace event on Sunday 16 July. The luxury hotel will be screening the Wimbledon men’s final on a large screen on an open-air sun-trap rooftop terrace where guests can enjoy lunch, light bites and drinks from 1:30pm until 7pm.
Grand Slam Mar-tea-ni Masterclass
In honour of Wimbledon, Christabel’s will be demonstrating how to make the perfect ‘Mar-tea-ni’ using fresh British berries paired with a selection of quintessentially British afternoon tea bites with a twist.
Guests of the experience will be greeted with earl grey bubbles before enjoying a mixology class and range of unique snacks including mini rum scones with clotted cream and metallic strawberries, finger sandwiches with ricotta, basil and raspberries and caramel tarts with strawberries and gin-infused cream.
This event is due to take place at 6:30pm on Thursday 6 July.
Picnic in the Park
Those looking to celebrate Wimbledon the traditional way can pick up fresh strawberries and cream from one of London’s many farmers’ markets and enjoy in a city park.
Hyde Park Farmers’ Market which takes place every Sunday from 9:30am – 1:30pm boasts a range of stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy produce and bakery items, all of which can be enjoyed in the peaceful surroundings of the royal park.
Pick up a punnet of strawberries and relax in the sun or practice your tennis skills at the park’s tennis and sports centre.
