Environmental Action Plan

Reducing our environmental impact is very important to us, our Environmental Action Plan is outlined below.

The first year of the Caledonian Sleeper franchise is an exciting time for us. Our mission is to welcome all of our guests to an exceptional hospitality experience while ensuring that we do so in a sustainable manner and reduce our environmental impact.

In the first year of our franchise (2015-2016), we will measure our environmental impact, covering energy and waste and set a baseline for reduction. The data from our first year will allow us to set reduction targets for the length of our 15 year franchise and we will work closely with our suppliers and Transport Scotland to achieve these targets.

Our trains

Working with our partners, Great British Railfreight (GBRf) we measure the energy used to power our trains. All of GBRf drivers are undergoing driver training to help them conserve energy and use tablets rather than paper which reduces paper use. We are also in the process of rolling out tablets to our on board staff along with our staff app which will significantly reduce paper use on board.

Our new trains

We are currently hard at work designing our new trains with CAF, our train manufacturer and Transport Scotland to ensure that our new trains once they enter service in 2018 are as efficient as possible. We will running a stakeholder consultation on our new trains so please look at our website for more information to get involved.

Working with our suppliers

We are an active supporter of Fairtrade products. Our bed linen, sourced from Aberdeen laundry is all Fairtrade cotton and washed at a low temperature to reduce energy consumption. We have worked closely with Caffia, our hot drinks supplier, based in Falkirk to stock Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar on board.
