Scotland’s magical snow-tinted mountains are the ideal playground for little ones who want to have a go at a host of winter activities.

Families from London and the South can book a more relaxing ski experience by booking Caledonian Sleeper’s overnight train service from London Euston, waking up bright and early, ready to hit the slopes. Children under 12 years enjoy complimentary dining and everyone can relax with skis travelling at no additional cost.

From ski schools and spectacular views to cosy hot chocolate stops to share stories, Caledonian Sleeper has compiled some of Scotland’s best ski spots for families.

Begin your snow adventure at Scotland’s only funicular railway. Located on CairnGorm Mountain, it offers stunning views across the mountain range. Providing access to the Top Station, families looking to explore the resort can warm up with a hot chocolate or hearty lunch at the Ptarmigan Restaurant – the highest in the UK. Also located here is a picturesque viewing terrace, shop and the highest post box in the British Isles.

Nevis Range is home to Britain’s only gondola system. Originally constructed on the mountain of Aonach Mor, just seven miles from Fort William, as a way to transport skiers to the slopes, the gondola is now also used by climbers keen to cut out challenging routes.

A highly acclaimed attraction, visitors can take the gondola and enjoy a scenic ride which offers views from as high as 2150ft. The round trip journey takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, with each gondola accommodating up to six people.

Remember to take some time out and recharge after a busy session on the slopes. The Ben Nevis Inn and Bunkhouse offers the perfect place for families to unwind. Located just outside of Fort William, the cosy setting is a rustic retreat providing live music and a tasty menu for children, along with stunning views.

On the outskirts of Aviemore, families have a chance to learn the ropes at the Cairngorm Sleddog Centre. The experience includes a walking tour of the dog yard and mushing barn and an opportunity to be hands on with the sled dogs before heading into the snow covered forest for a real life training session.

Based close to Aviemore, Cairngorm Mountain Snow School offers professional instruction for all ages and levels, including group and private lessons. The Cairngorm Shredders mini and junior courses offer kid-focussed lessons perfect for children looking to learn in a fun and safe environment. For little snowboarders, the school’s new Burton Riglet snowboard lessons are a great experience, with boards as small as 70cm, which are easy and comfortable to use.

Enjoy a winter break with your family to the UK’s skiing capital with Caledonian Sleeper.
