Family-friendly holidays

With more and more families opting to stay within the UK for their holidays, what better way to enjoy some of the best the country has to offer than with the Caledonian Sleeper?

Taking the plane can be difficult enough when you are on your own, but keeping children amused during a flight is a thankless task. With the Caledonian Sleeper the whole family can sleep their way to some of the most beautiful family destinations in the Scottish Highlands.

Natural Retreats offer escapism and activities for the whole family. Located in picturesque surroundings, just nine miles from our stop at Aviemore, CairnGorm Mountain is the most popular snow sports destination in Scotland.

From their in-house Snow School, the UK’s highest Funicular Railway, their fine dining options to breath-taking walks, scenery and wildlife, CairnGorm Mountain offers experiences for the whole family. Qualified instructors provide skiing or snowboard lessons for children as young as pre-school age, and the on-site restaurant The Storehouse has a specialist children’s menu.

Parents are also well catered for. In addition to the activities, The Storehouse offers freshly made meals and a selection of produce from their on-site bakery. Of course, in addition, you have access to some of the best snow conditions in Europe.

Home to the highest point in the UK, the Nevis Range looms large over our stop at Fort William, with Ben Nevis (4,409 ft) the obvious focal point. The Range itself offers snow sports in majestic surroundings, with guidance and lessons available for all age ranges, as well as nature walks and paragliding.

However, the Nevis Range is also home to some of the best mountain biking terrain in the world, and it’s little wonder, with the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup based in Fort William and the Mountain Bike and Trails World Championship in nearby Lochaber. The cycle trails at the Nevis Range offer something for every level of ability.

If you’re looking for something exotic, Highland Wildlife Park could be exactly your kind of trip. The Park is situated between two of our stops - Aviemore and Kingussie – and provides a great day out for the whole family in the spectacular setting of Kincraig.

Highland Wildlife Park

With more than 30 different animals, children and adults can see the likes of red deer, Amur tigers and three polar bears, called Walker, Arktos and Victoria. The Park provides the polar bears with the largest dedicated space of any zoological institution in the world, meaning the bears have over 10 acres of ground. The newest editions to the Wildlife’s Park family are two snow leopards, Chan and Animesh, who arrived in July 2015.

With regular talks and feedings throughout the day, the Highland Wildlife Park will bring you and your family closer to endangered species than ever before, while educating you on important conservation efforts.

For those of a particularly adventurous bent, Landmark Forest Adventure Park offers an adventure filled day out for all ages. This park is just a short walk from our stop at Carrbridge in the Scottish Highlands. From wild water coasters to the ancient forest trail, from rope obstacles to high wire challenge courses, from the shooting gallery to the climbing wall – Landmark has something to offer everyone.

Landmark also plays host to the world’s first ‘Bamboozeleum’, a tribute to the world of the weird and wonderful, featuring illusions, puzzles and special effects.

If you want to experience a unique way of taking in the Highland air, then Zip Trek Park comes highly recommended. The UK’s first Zip Trek Adventure Park, located near another of our stops in Aviemore, invites you to take an exhilarating aerial ride through a stunning 2km course in the Scottish Pine Forest. Zip trekkers have so far ranged from 5 years old to 95 years old.

The Scottish Highlands offers a wealth of opportunities for family holidays, and with Caledonian Sleeper, you can reach them from London Euston in the blink of an eye.
